Sled racers and fans of the sport are undoubtedly familiar with the Alaskan Husky. Everyone else? Maybe not. At Dog Chef, we help you learn all you can about the Alaskan Huskies’ character, temperament, and demands before bringing one into your home.
As opposed to being a specific breed, Alaskan Huskies represent a canine category. Hundreds of years ago, pioneers from Canada and the northern United States created these unparalleled Arctic explorers. With no restrictions imposed by breed standards, Arctic Huskies come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colours, and they excel at a wide variety of jobs. Since they are smaller and thinner than their Siberian Husky and Malamute counterparts, they are able to run faster and farther than their rivals in competitive sledding. The high demand for an Alaskan Husky’s abilities as a working and competitive animal means that the breed is rarely seen as a pet.
Alaskan Huskies can appear differently. Some resemble Siberian Huskies, but most are medium-sized. Their rainbow-coloured coat makes them easy to recognise despite their Arctic origins. Self-cleaning coats remove embedded material with skin oils. Some resemble Siberian Huskies, while others are plain; the German Shorthaired Pointer can be seen in spotting or solid colouring.
Most Alaskan Huskies have huge, forward-facing, moveable ears. Unlike Arctic breeds, most Alaskans have black eyes. They have long, muscular limbs, neck, and back, a coiled tail like a Spitz, and a tucked abdomen. All of these factors can vary, though, and dogs that were bred to pull heavy loads rather than to run fast may look more stocky and heavy-set.
Alaskan Huskies are clever, deeply committed, hardworking dogs. These pups were raised to pull sleds, so they need to keep moving to be happy. When they get enough exercise, they’re calm people to live with. But if they don’t get enough exercise, they might do things like chewing or digging that you don’t want them to do.
Alaskan Huskies have a strong pack mentality because they are used to working in a group. That means they like having a family and don’t like being alone
Alaskan Huskies thrive on a high-quality life-stage diet. Working dogs need seasonal diets. (More protein in winter while hauling sleds, less in summer when less active.) To keep your dog healthy, monitor their food intake. Avoid overfeeding and limit snacks to 10% of their daily calories.
Alaskan Huskies shed a lot. Brushing an Alaskan Husky’s coat at least twice a week keeps it clean and healthy. Pin brushing more often during seasonal shedding helps eliminate old coat. They also need regular nail trimming. Overgrown nails can hurt and impair running and walking.
Long-term dog health requires good dental hygiene. Adult dogs often have dental diseases. Untreated, it might cause major difficulties. In addition to professional cleanings, brush teeth and use vet-recommended dental chews at home.
Alaskan Huskies must exercise frequently. They love sledding, skijoring, and carting. Long walks and runs work when that’s not possible.
Basic obedience training will help them mentally. Strong-willed Alaskan Huskies Start consistent, tough, but compassionate puppy training to combat stubbornness. This breed responds nicely to rewards and favourite toys.
Most Alaskan Huskies are in good health. As with many other working dogs, genetic diseases have not been passed down through the breeding stock. This is because any physical or medical problems would seriously lower the value of the dog. But Alaskans do sometimes have some of the same problems as the other Arctic breeds.
Cataract, Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Laryngeal Dysplasia, Obesity, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy are some of the common health conditions in the breed.
