In Belgium today, more than 50% of dogs suffer from being overweight or obesity. No big deal, you say? Did you know that obesity in dogs reduces their life expectancy by 2 to 3 years on average?<\/span><\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p><b><em><span style=\"color:#007670\" class=\"has-inline-color\">In this article, we take stock of the risks associated with obesity in dogs as well as concrete solutions to fight against this scourge.<\/span><\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I know if my dog is too big? (Take the test!)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>To find out if your dog is wrapped up too much, you will need to assess his BCS (Body Condition Score). The BCS allows you to objectively assess whether your dog is overweight, underweight, or at an ideal weight. The score ranges between 1 (thinness) and 9 (morbid obesity). The ideal score is 5.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Start by observing your dog and be as objective as possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<ul><li>When you look at it from above, is its waist very slim and visible?<\/li><li>Can you feel its ribs when you feel the flanks? (be careful, the ribs should not be visible, but you should be able to feel them)<\/li><li>Can you feel its backbone?<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>If <strong>you have difficulty feeling<\/strong> your dog&#8217;s <strong>ribs and spine, his waist is missing<\/strong> and there are more or less significant<strong> fat deposits<\/strong> or his abdomen is distended, <strong>your dog is overweight or obese.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the consequences of obesity in dogs?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cardio-respiratory consequences:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Beyond being obviously overweight, the obese dog will have less endurance, it will also find it more difficult to withstand the heat and will be out of breath more quickly, will suffer from hypertension, etc. This will ultimately make him less active and further increase his weight problem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orthopaedic consequences:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Being overweight will also increase hip problems, hernias, osteoarthritis, cruciate ligament damage, humerus fractures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Endocrine problems:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>For example diabetes or pancreatitis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But also:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Obesity in dogs also promotes certain types of cancers and tumours, whether benign or not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you treat obesity? <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Now that we have your full attention, we&#8217;re going to talk to you about solutions (We weren&#8217;t going to just leave you like this, though.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>The good news is that solutions exist and they are easy to implement! (you see, you won&#8217;t have come for nothing).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Physical activity<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>To maintain optimal health, your dog needs to move and exert himself to feel good both physically and mentally. So put on your walking shoes and go out for at least 30 minutes a day with your furry friend (link).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diet<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Of course, physical activity is not everything! You will probably need to rethink your dog&#8217;s diet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<ul><li>We advise you to offer a <strong>lower energy diet or to reduce the quantities.<\/strong> Since your dog may not be happy with the second option, it will be best to reduce the source of carbohydrates (pasta, potatoes, rice, etc.)<\/li><li>You will also need to <strong>stimulate the saturation<\/strong> of your furry friend: to do this, nothing could be simpler, we increase the source of fibre (just take vegetables)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p>Good to know: Homemade mix (link) is rich in water. A fresh meal therefore increases the volume of food ingested (without increasing the calorie intake), which has the effect of bloating the stomach. When the stomach is distended, it sends a signal of fullness to the brain. Easy, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<ul><li>Finally, you will need to opt for a balanced diet. The goal is to decrease fat mass and increase or maintain muscle mass. And more specifically as part of a weight loss plan:<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<ul><li>The source of protein, fibre and essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6) is increased considerably<\/li><li>The source of vitamins and minerals (antioxidants) is slightly increased<\/li><li>Carbohydrates are drastically reduced<\/li><li>Fat is maintained or reduced by up to 10% (ask your veterinarian for advice)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"default__block container-fluid lg \">\n<p><b>Sounds complicated?
