For April, we give you the chance to create a home-made bowl holder from salvaged wood. All colours, sizes and materials are possible. For this tutorial, we used salvaged pallets from EURO PALETTE. <\/span><\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

So what is the dog bowl holder for?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

As its name suggests, the bowl holder, or dog bar, is used to lift the bowls of our furry friends off the floor. The advantages of this are various: <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n
  • Eating above ground level relieves joints in older dogs<\/li>
  • It prevents the dog from pushing its meal around the house<\/li>
  • Finally, the bowl holder reduces the amount of air ingested during the meal and aids digestion<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n

    Difficulty level: 3\/5<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

    \n

    Time needed: about 4 hours<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

    \n

    Required equipment<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
    • 1 sander or sandpaper (80 or 120 grit)<\/li>
    • 1 jigsaw<\/li>
    • 1 drill\/screwdriver<\/li>
    • 35 mm screws<\/li>
    • 1 pencil<\/li>
    • 1 tape measure<\/li>
    • 1 compass (yes, welcome to the Dog Chef Academy )<\/li>
    • Wooden slats or salvaged pallet<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Before starting:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      The dimensions of this bowl holder have been calculated for a cocker spaniel, feel free to adapt the dimensions to the size of your dog. The ideal height for your bowl holder is the height of your dog’s shoulder. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      The bowls in our tutorial are 16 cm in diameter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      STEP 1: dismantle your pallet<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      If you are using pre-cut wooden planks, go directly to step 2<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      Once your pallet is dismantled, keep 3 of the widest boards for your structure as well as another board of any width (used to strengthen the structure).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      STEP 2: cut your boards to the correct length <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      For the surfaces: draw a first line at 50 cm and a second 50 cm further along on 2 of your 3 wide boards<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      For the sides: draw a line each 10 cm, so you will have a total of 4 lines on your last wide board<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Then saw your planks where you marked your lines. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      In total, you will now have 4 boards of 50 cm and 4 boards of 10 cm<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 3: Determine where the bowls will go<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      Now is the time to pull out the compass! Measure a radius of 15 cm and draw a circle directly on your boards using your compass. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Tip: at this point, the boards are not yet fixed, remember to tighten them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 4: Connect the boards <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      Cut:<\/b> Take the last board and cut 3 battens 27 cm long by 3 cm wide<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Place:<\/b> the first batten on the left, 2cm from the edge, the second in the middle and the third on the right, 2cm from the edge. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Screw:<\/b> each of the battens directly to the surface. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Tip: remember to pre-drill your battens so that the wood does not split when putting in the screws. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      STEP 5: Cut a circle for the bowls<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      Use the jigsaw to follow the circle you drew previously with the compass. It’s okay if the circle isn’t perfect. The most important thing is that the hole is not too big (so the bowls cannot drop through).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      Tip: Use your drill to make a hole inside your circle, close to the edge, which will allow you to insert the blade of your jigsaw without risking an accident<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 6: Attach the side boards (height)<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      You will need the 4 boards of 10cm length for this step. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      \n

      Attach the first two boards directly to the battens so that they form a right angle with the top. Repeat for the other side. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 7: Reinforce the structure <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      Take the last 2 boards of 50 cm in length and screw them directly onto the boards on the side of your structure<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 8: Sand<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      Lightly sand the bowl holder to remove any splinters that could injure your dog. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

      STEP 9: Varnish <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n

      For better hygiene, we recommend that you varnish the bowl holder so that it can be cleaned more easily and to prevent dirt from getting stuck in it. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
